Part 22: What to Do?
They were about half a day from arriving at the trench, when the company came upon a disturbing discovery. Lailie and Anvid detected another thought presence not far in front them, so they began to approach slowly and with caution. All they could interpret of the thought process was that it was a single creature who was scared. It was only a matter of minutes before they finally caught sight of the mystery creature, and they immediately recognized it as a Cumulus. It was unusual for a Cumulus to be out by itself, unless it was a scout. But, even a scout shouldn’t be venturing into the trenches. Perhaps Ludan had concocted some new plan.
The small group was highly curious as to why the creature had come into the trench in the first place. Basalt would usually chase off Cumulus by use of their sound guns, which were filled with capsules that made a piercing sound upon firing. The Cumulus were particularly sensitive to high pitched sounds and could not tolerate them. Chasing the Cumulus off with the sound gun was the group’s first thought.
“Or…” Anvid trailed deviously, “we could try to capture it.”
Ellara and Kadden stared in disbelief. “You only just found out that these highly dangerous, immortal creatures even exist,” Kadden paused, raising an eyebrow, “and now you want to capture one?!”
