Vestige of Credence: Chapter 1
Part 4: A City of Coral
“That scout can’t have gone far,” Kadden interrupted her train of thought. “We really should find shelter for now.” He pointed, “Over there. It looks like there could be shelter in those rock mounds. It is only about two miles out. I think we could make it.”
They reached the destination quickly, their muscular bodies being accustom to the resistance of the strong current. With the exertion, both Ellara and Kadden had worked up an appetite, so they searched for food and shelter around the small rocky formations. Their diet often consisted of seaweed, a great source of minerals. It wasn’t very frequent though that they feasted on a lobster treat. Having spotted some lobsters nearby, they snatched a couple up and located a small cave to reside in for a rest. The sound of loud crunching pierced the quiet cave as the two ate. Their exceptionally strong Basalt teeth bit loudly through the shells as they devoured the raw lobsters. The sound of their meal was all that filled the water. Trying times often left the pair dwelling in their own thoughts and avoiding difficult conversations. It didn’t seem like there was much of anything happy to talk about, so they preferred silence.
Though she slept only a little, Ellara’s dreams again carried her back home. The great civilization of the Basalt was all she had known. A place where she had resided from the time she was born. It was a place where balance with the rest of the planet had been maintained since the beginning of time. The beautiful towering coral wall had housed the Basalt people, along with their chosen elders, for generations. They had been responsible for monitoring sea life while the Cumulus had maintained and overseen the skies. It had been such a simple task and yet so easily they had gone astray.
