Vestige of Credence: Chapter 3
Part 16: The Unbalance
Ellara and Kadden soon found themselves seated in a large chamber. They could just barely hear Lailie speaking with others outside before they entered the room. “Lailie tells me many things about you, and she thinks maybe we can help each other,” stated a man not much taller than Lailie. He appeared to be a leader and wore only what looked like thinly crafted graphite pants. Lailie wore a similar short graphite dress that seemed to work well as camouflage when she transformed her skin.
“I am called Maximus, and I have led these people since the beginning. We have never struggled in all our years as much as we have recently while the land has been shifting. Some of our people say the planet is dying and these are the end of our days. We have contemplated what actions, if any, to take in an effort to save our lives. Until now, we didn’t even know what could be done. Your coming has enlightened us, and after discussion amongst other leaders we think it is in everyone’s best interest to help you.”
“How do you mean, help us?” Kadden responded.
“We know of your journey and what you hope to achieve” he replied.
Ellara replied with uncertainty, “Do you understand the details of our mission? It is likely we will not survive this quest. All odds are against us.”
“All odds are against you,” he repeated, a sad flicker in his eye and his chin brushing his chest as his head lowered. “My people have been against all odds for months now. Our world is crumbling and falling in on us. The very walls that have kept us safe for millions of years are now crashing down on our heads.” Maximus went on to describe the horrors in recent months and that they had no hope of surviving on their own.
From Ellara’s mind, Lailie had learned much about the Cumulus, the war, and—most importantly—the unbalance.
