Vestige of Credence: Chapter 3
Love Fantasy Books Series Part 17: The Dragile
“Ellara,” Lailie softly spoke, “I have heard from your very thoughts of the nearly impossible and improbable things that could lie before us. But Anvid and I wish to offer our assistance on your mission. He is our highest ranking Dragile trainer.”
Being able to read their minds, Maximus knew immediately they had never heard of the Dragile before, so he elaborated. “The Dragile have been with the Graphine from the start. They have coexisted peacefully with us, and we are blessed by their companionship.”
They looked similar to reptiles, but also featured scales down their back. They were typically dark gray and orange in color. They could stand on their back two legs, but usually preferred to walk on all four legs. Dragile could spit fire, which had always been a tool-making and cooking asset to the Graphine.
“They are very docile creatures, other than when it comes to meal time,” he offered. “But we Graphine have never really been a menu option for them because of our graphite skin. And, as it turns out, the Dragile have a taste for lava larkas.”
“Docile creatures,” Ellara repeated in her mind with uncertainty. Staring up at the giant winged reptile with sharp teeth, she found that difficult to believe.
“They very rarely need to feed anyway, and when they do it is not difficult to track down larkas in nearby lava ponds,” Maximus continued. Lava larkas are the initial reason for creation of elusa nets, which the Graphine utilized in many ways. The Graphine never understood why the elusa was so harmful to the larkas, but those nets seemed to be most effective in trapping them.
The relationship between the Graphine and Dragile had been symbiotic for a long time. The Graphine could easily use their camouflage to spy and flush larkas into the open to be hunted by the Dragile. These species offered companionship to each other. The Graphine could not only use the Dragile’s fire to help with tool building and cooking, but long ago the two species had labored together to develop the speedy underground tunnels connecting all sub ground civilizations. Maximus mentioned also that Dragile can fly faster than the Graphine can walk or swim. The tunnels were big enough for them to soar through and carry Graphine on their backs. Ellara and Kadden then realized why the tunnels were so wide.
