Vestige of Credence: Chapter 1
Part 5: One Problem at a Time
The elders tried to preserve the history of their civilization, not only through written documentation on thin rock slabs, but through the telling of stories of the ancient times. Some Basalt guessed that they were created and placed on the planet by a wiser being. Others reasoned that maybe there was no beginning or end to their chain of life; they assumed that Basalt had always existed and always would, as long as the planet lived. Ellara could remember lessons from her youth about so many scientific possibilities and theories of how the universe functioned, but personally she never really cared too much about the answers to all those questions.
Quickly, her dreams shifted back to Eva; her thoughts always went back to Eva. Sometimes the hardest thing for Ellara was that her memories of Eva already seemed to be fading, even after so little time. Maybe that was why she thought of her so often, so that she wouldn’t slip away. Eva must have been terrified when she was taken. Ellara could only think of being reunited. She knew the Cumulus leader was rotten and evil, but for what purpose was he kidnapping Basalt women? Ellara could not imagine why the Cumulus would do it, and she did not care; she just wanted Eva to be safe.
They started out down the unfamiliar path, wary of what might lay before them.
“Do you really think the war is causing these earth quakes, Kadden?” Ellara questioned as she felt trembling beneath her feet.
The terrain had been the same for as long as they could remember, but as the balance began shifting, so did the land beneath them.
“That is what they say, isn’t it?” he answered. “I love how you act like I have the answers to everything, Ellara. I don’t know anything more than you.”
“Yeah, but… I mean, what is your opinion? Aren’t you bothered by the earth shakes and land splitting? Don’t you want to know what is happening?”
“I figure Terryl is probably upset, if you must know,” he said quietly. “Honestly, I try not to think too much about things out of my control. And right now I am more worried about trying to protect our people from the direct threat of the Cumulus.” He paused, catching his breath as they hastened through the water. “We can only fix one problem at a time.”
